Work Overview

I received the commission to write a short piano piece for the New York International Pianofest Piano Bowl in 2002, just two weeks before my pregnancy due date - putting me in that rare category of women who actually don't want their pregnancies to end. (In fact, the final version was hurriedly sent off on the way to the hospital while in labor.) The timing of a late pregnancy and the commission lent itself to express the emotions I was going through, including the exhilaration and joy, but also the tension and apprehension about the challenge ahead and fears about to what extent my life would be changing. Instead of musically contrasting these seemingly contrasting emotions in different parts of the piece, I looked for a musical language that would stir them all together. A certain lightness and feel of floating harmonies, yet gritty enough colors (based on stacked 4ths and minor 2nds) that were neither too tonal nor foreign to tonality. Sometimes there is an underlying tonal or modal language, but dense harmonies and traditional cadences are avoided. Rhythm is the most significant element in the piece, and rhythmically speaking, the main three stylistic influences are: African polyrhythms, the bouncy odd meter rhythms typical of music from the Balkan countries, and old school Funk music with it's irregular groupings of 2 and 3 notes superimposed a 4/4 meter creating some fun syncopations. One of my approaches to this piece was to purposely 'mess with' the rhythmic predictability by letting certain patterns get established just long enough to be recognized as a pattern and then disrupting or slightly changing the pattern.
