Work Overview
These Three Folk-Elegies are based on British folksongs. The 4th Irish Canon treats the famous "Irish Tune from County Derry" in canons set a 4th apart, beginning mysteriously and building to a majestic final verse. Endpiece uses three folktunes: "Lovely Joan", "The Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol" and "Rufford Park Poachers", with each being treated in canons. The Return imagines the distant bells of a seaside town with a group of troubadours approaching while dancing and playing. The bells increase in intensity as the party approaches the town. Folktunes used are "Lisbon" and "I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In".
