The Three Preludes and a Fugue on BACH were composed for
Claire Edwardes for performance at the New England Bach
Each movement is based in different way on the BACH (B flat, A, C, B natural) motif used by Bach in his last unfinished composition, and each also reflects a stylistic approach used by Bach as homage
rather than pastiche. So we find a pedal point, a French overture, a chorale over a flowing arpeggiated melody and a fugue.
Instrumentation: Marimba (marimba player also needs to hum and use a referee's whistle).
Written for: Claire Edwardes
Commission note: Commissioned with funds provided by Australia Council. Music Board.
