No need to go to Leipzig. The music of J.S. Bach is alive in Australia’s cool little capital. The essential and the unexpected collide in glorious counterpoint, with artists from around the world amongst Canberra’s natural and cultural treasures. With a host of concerts and events from breakfast to bedtime, the 2019 Festival shows Bach – and the capital – in a new light.
The 25th Canberra International Music Festival revels in the ever-deepening artistry of baroque specialists from Australia and Europe, including Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Bach Akademie Australia directed by Madeleine Easton and rising star Korneel Bernolet. International heavyweights such as Brodsky Quartet, Quatuor Voce and Vyacheslav Gryaznov join forces with some of Australia’s most charismatic artists: Kristian Winther, Andrew Goodwin, Natalie Peluso and many more. The majesty of Bach’s musical architecture continues to inspire new and unexpected pathways. Enter the Ntaria Ladies Choir, ‘keepers of song’, and intrepid musicians like Dan Tepfer, sonic.art saxophone quartet and Trio SR9.
Bach is alive in Canberra. And so is the 2019 composers’ collective-in-residence: Jess Green, Bree van Reyk and Nick Wales. Along with Moya Henderson, Ella Macens, Chris Sainsbury and Michael Dooley, they create new work for our 25th Anniversary.
