Product details
This piece uses Australian writers to comment on Milton's iconic poem "The Peaceful Night," about the birth of Jesus Christ.
Advent, in Europe, marks the turning point from mid-winter towards harvest and is a time of hope for re-birth, symbolised in the journey towards summer sun. This, then, creates an interesting conflict of experience in Australia where the difficulties of bush-fire and drought, brought by the Antipodean sun, typifies this same time of year.
"The Peaceful Night" combines Milton's European reflections on the evening when Christ was born, with two Australian texts celebrating the coming of daylight over the sea. All three texts examine the emergence of light from darkness, the coming from night, winter, want, to the birth of sun, daylight and hope
