Work Overview

'Inspired by a true story: In January 1992 the cargo ship Ever Laurel was caught in a North Pacific storm, spilling overboard several 12m containers holding 28,800 duck bath toys.

The first beaching was in Alaska, some 1500km away. Over the years there were more along the US West Coast, Russia and Hawaii. Tracked by scientists, the ducks' journey has shed insight into ocean currents and wind patterns, spawning computer simulated models, articles and books. Against the vastness of the ocean, this childish plaything, man-made and indigenous to the bathtub, evokes the indomitable spirit of the first epic ocean voyages'. From www.matthewquick.com.au

Awakening takes on a Disneyesque picture of this tale. The audience is invited to think of the rubber ducks as personalities; in slumber, travelling towards a life to be lived in a tiny family bathtub. However, their opportunity for 'escape', to travel the world and explore the ocean instead emerges instead.

Plummet, a 4-minute slow motion 'snapshot' of the larger-than-life rubber ducks plummeting to the ocean amidst sun, glistening sea-spray, evoking feelings of freedom.

Trash Vortex, one of the names for the Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a large circular ocean current in the North Pacific Ocean (around 19 million square kilometres in size). This current collects marine debris, mostly plastics but also many other items such as glass bottles, cans and general pollution.
