Australian music for guitar
The guitar has held a prominent place in Australian art music. This is especially due to Australian producing international soloists that include John Williams, Karin Schaupp, Craig Ogden, Andrew Blanche, Alexandr Tsiboulski, Vladimir Gorbach, Matt Withers and Slava and Leonard Grigoryan who have worked hard to commission and promote Australian music in their repertoire.
In addition, guitar ensembles such as Guitar Trek led by Timothy Kain have commissioned numerous works for guitar ensemble which have been performed widely throughout Australia and overseas. Australian guitar concertos include Nigel Westlake’s ‘Antarctica Suite’ as well as recent concertos by Daniel Rojas and Cathy Milliken. Composer/guitarists include Richard Charlton, Michael Knopf and Christpher Sainsbury who have contributed greatly to the canon by composing works that include guitar across all genres.
