2018 Art Music Awards - finalists announced

Finalists for the 2018 Art Music Awards have been announced. With a great many first-time finalists and emerging composers among the shortlisted artists, as well as a vast geographical spread, this year promises to be a particularly forward-looking one in the history of the Awards.

Composers shortlisted in the Work of the Year categories are Anne Cawrse, Alice Chance, Mary Finsterer and Andrew Ford (Vocal/Choral Work of the Year); Sandy Evans, Ellen Kirkwood, Johannes Luebbers and Matthew Sheens (Jazz Work of the Year); Corrina Bonshek, Lisa Cheney, Lisa Illean and Jakub Jankowski (Instrumental Work of the Year); and Maria Grenfell, Andrián Pertout, Lachlan Skipworth and Paul Stanhope (Orchestral Work of the Year).

Shortlisted in the Performance of the Year category are the Australian String Quartet and cellist Pieter Wispelwey (for their performance of Gordon Kerry's work); Eighth Blackbird (work by Holly Harrison); Matthew Horsley (work by Liam Flenady) and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and soloists, conducted by Simone Young (work by Andrew Schultz).

Nominated in other categories are artists Leah Barclay, Connor D'Netto, John Ferguson, Barney McAll, Jeremy Rose, Vanessa Tomlinson, Eugene Ughetti, Carl Vine, Keyna Wilkins, and organisations from all over Australia: Tura New Music, Alister Spence Trio, WASO, Move, Moorambilla Voices, Orpheus Club String Quartet, Splinter Orchestra, Australian Art Orchestra, Gondwana Choirs, Big hART, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Wind Symphony, Chamber Made and MLC School (Sydney).

The 2018 Art Music Awards will be presented to the winners in eleven national categories, as well as Australian state or territory awards, on Tuesday 21 August at Melbourne's Plaza Ballroom. The ceremony will be hosted by Jonathan Biggins, with a performance program curated by Gabriella Smart.

The APRA Board of Directors will announce the recipient of the Distinguished Services to Australian Music in coming weeks. Recent recipients of this honour include John Pochée, Richard Gill, George Dreyfus, Helen Gifford and Peter Sculthorpe.

CEO of the Australian Music Centre, John Davis, said,
'It's particularly good to see first-time finalists and the emerging generation of artists featured prominently across this year's award categories, alongside more established names. This is testament to the vibrancy of our art music scene, reflecting a rich landscape of creative practice across the sector.'

Annual Art Music Awards are presented by the Australian Music Centre and APRA AMCOS. The AMC would like to congratulate all finalists for their achievement.
